I am not familiar
with many bands out of Finland. However, one of the finest black
metal bands to come out of that country is indeed none other than
BEHEXEN. Formed in 1994 by vocalist Torog, drummer Horn
and guitarist Reaper they released several demos in the late 90s,
leaving many black metal fans wanting more. My Soul For
His Glory is their third full length and triumphant release.
As all black
metal albums begin, they usually give us an intro song. Instead
of a grim piano, we get a more sinister intro which sounds like
a midnight black mass is about begin with the toll of a rather
evil sounding bell. A perfect introduction for the music to come.
BEHEXEN is satanic black metal at its highest. The music
is aggressive and incredibly evil. The vocals on this album are
spellbinding; it’s as if Torog has channeled many demons
from inside himself. The variety of his vocals from song to song
make the Occultism atmosphere of this album, from the blood curdling
growls, to the gravelly screaming, to sounding like a corpse speaking
form the grave to the satanic chanting. The guitars are handled
by Gargantum and Reaper, two members who compliment each other
well. Together they rip the riffs that the devil himself would
bang his head to. You can call it a mix of Finish Filth and Black
Metal… they are at times evilly melodic and entrancing as
well as fast and ferocious. The drums go from blast beats then
at times slow down to change the pace of the song completely.
Even the bass can be heard quite well. The production of this
album is quite good considering it’s a black metal album,
as fans of the genre know, sometimes you get a muddy mix, but
this is not the case. Each song on this album has its own different
sound… like as if each were its own demonic entity. That
right there keeps you listening and wanting more. There never
seems to be a dull moment on My Soul For His Glory.
In any case, I am currently under its spell.
