At first, I do not recommend this debut album as background irrigation, because the complicated mixture brims over with distinct turns concerning speed and sentiments.
Regarding the vocals, a clear and bright timbre dominates for a bigger part, every now and then the band intersperses some loosening growls. Some listeners may need the vocal arrangements for orientation, if the sounds get all too weird and madcap. In this regard, the track Kingdoms Without Shape turns out to be a crafty ear candy with Dream-Theater-like structure and harmony. In course of the quite unloading compositions, the septet combines cumbersome rhythms to dislocate some vertebrae, some Hammond sounds, acoustic guitar’s motives, long drawn lead melodies or borne intermezzi, which sum up to a variable broad sound.
The Mystic acts a little bit more direct with its Thrash-rhythm and integrates aggressive vocals felicitously, ere they get mingled with a headstrong clear voice. Afterwards, the very calm and atmospheric middle part invites to lean back in relaxation, till speed augments towards the end anew.
In my opinion, (older) Opeth can be heard as engraving influence while enjoying the epic tune Meridian Smiles; some bulky measures won’t glide into the auditory canals and force me to listen with full concentration. After a growled sequence, a totally harmonious piano part comes into operation and underlines the group’s emotional side. This sensitive component shows up during the concluding track
The Laughter Echoes clearly again, because there is no change in mood here – the surprise is quasi no surprise for the recipient used to musical breaks.
In other respects, this work lives on turnarounds and many contrasts like rigorous/gentle or complex/harmonious. ANDSOLIS demand rapt attention with playful and sophisticated, but at the same time coherent sounds.
